The Punta Banco Sea Turtle Conservation Project conserves Olive Ridley, Green & Hawksbill Sea Turtles that are in danger of extinction.
The Conservation Project originally started in 1996 and since 2015 has a strong socioeconomic impact on the small community, as the project pays for the ecological services by its volunteers. The triad „employment-education-conservation“ is a success story!
The project consists of 50 passionate local volunteers. All continously trained by a biologist. They patrol the dedicated 10km beach zone every night in the nesting season, June-January, to find sea turtle nests and carefully relocate them to the three dedicated hatcheries. After 45-60 days the baby turtles hatch and are released into the Pacific ocean in a safe environment.
In the past past 6 years the project has released more than 250.000 sea turtle hatchlings.
